You Can't Go Back

C.S. Lewis is often credited with saying, “You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.”

Understand this: The ending has yet to be written.

Have you ever replayed an argument from fifteen years ago and suddenly come up with the perfect response?

Of course you have. Unfortunately, the other person has moved on and that chapter is probably closed for good.

You can’t unsay the sentence, change the decision, recover the lost years, or explain to your younger self that confidence and good judgment are not the same thing. Some of us just needed several demonstrations.

Still, we keep revisiting old mistakes as though life might eventually offer store credit.

It won’t.

You can’t go back. But you can start where you are and change the ending.
